Coffee May Protect Against Stroke

Not to sound breathless about the latest health news about coffee, but UCLA has recently released a research alert regarding coffee and stroke risk.

UCLA analyzed national health survey data and found that, in the adult population, stroke (and other vascular risk factors) decrease as the number of daily cups of coffee increase.  Yippee!

Symptoms of stroke are “far less common” in people reporting intake of more than six cups of coffee per day, said researchers, who advocate further studies to pursue the beneficial effects of coffee on stroke, including its potential blood-vessel protective properties.

The lead study author is Dr. David Liebeskind, who is the associate neurology director at the UCLA Stroke Center.  This research was presented on February 19th at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2009.

Just in my (short =) lifetime we have seen coffee painted as a great health evil to now reading that coffee has health benefits never before recognized.  Of course, as I have stated on these pages before, moderation in ALL things is the prudent course of action.  That too includes our favorite beverage, coffee.

So now please go and enjoy a nice, fresh roasted cup knowing that it is not a vice but a gift from God to be enjoyed.  And why not support your local, independent coffee shop today.
