Mickey D’s Beat the Star?

I recently read an online review from Consumer Reports taste-testing premium coffee from three fast food restaurants to Starbucks. The contenders were McDonald’s, Burger King, and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Apparently, this was all prompted by the McDonald’s McCafe promise to “wake up and smell your life” with a “richer, bolder” coffee. BK and Dunkin’ had similar ad lines. This was all meant to elevate your perception of them in the premium coffee arena.

So Consumer Reports did a comparison by purchasing a medium-sized cup of black (no sugar, milk, or flavoring) coffee from each of the chains. The testers also went to two locations of each, I suppose to reduce the chance that on store might be having a “bad joe day.” Bad Joe, bad, bad Joe. Sorry.

You can read their story online by clicking here, however, the bottom line was that McDonald’s won the taste and price test. One of the Consumer Reports mantras is why pay more if you don’t have to, so price was important in the findings.

A personal observation is that McDonald’s is opening more McCafes and seeing the distinctive Mickey D’s coffee cup is more common. Is it because it tastes better or simply more convenient? I have never had McDonald’s premium coffee so it could be really good and I don’t know it. I limit myself to the Americano at Starbucks so I’m not one who could report an extensive experience here.

However, I may just have to go through the drive-thru the next time I’m passing the golden arches. I hope my friends at Cafe Baristo don’t see me.

Have the BEST cup ever!
