What Flavor is Your Coffee?
Flavored coffees are roasted, whole-bean coffee beans that have been mixed with flavoring agents.
While once only the ubiquitous hazelnut or french vanilla flavor was available, today coffee comes in many flavors. These include, Irish crème, southern pecan, chocolate, and, of course hazelnut. You may think of flavored coffees as modern but the ancient Arabs added spices to coffee while it brewed. In the seventeenth century, Europeans who were practically swimming in chocolate, combined chocolate with coffee.
Of course, alcohol was soon involved. Hazelnut, the most popular of coffee flavors resulted from mixing Frangelico, a hazelnut-flavored liqueur, with coffee. Similarly, Irish coffee was created when Irish whiskey was added to coffee.
As mentioned above, flavorings are actually added to the whole coffee bean after it is roasted, not after brewing as some think, resulting in a much stronger flavor.
Some serious coffee drinkers detest the taste of flavored coffee, because it can exhibit a slight metallic aftertaste. However, as seen by the popularity, many people like the added flavors of coffee. In the end, it is a personal preference.
If you prefer a flavored coffee, or if it is an occasional special treat, there are many flavors to choose from.
